Why Regular Houses Are Weird For Pro Bodybuilders
Professional bodybuilders have unique needs to maintain their lifestyle. Fans are often curious about how the mass monsters of the Men’s Open division perform typically mundane tasks like grocery shopping, riding in vehicles, or house hunting.
IFBB Pro League Men’s Open bodybuilder Martin Fitzwater took a camera crew with him as he and his wife scouted prospective homes in Houston, TX. As expected, there were many hurdles a non-bodybuilder wouldn’t have to deal with. However, for the 2024 Prague Pro champion, physically fitting into spaces designed for humans not adorned in elite levels of muscle mass is a challenge that can make or break a home purchase.
Fitzwater showed five of six houses he was considering on camera. House hunting with a bodybuilder is not the same as it would be for other folks. There are specific requirements bodybuilders need.
Office? You Mean Posing Room
Fitzwater looked at several rooms of a house that could serve as office space. He explored the lighting and potential for mirrors in the space to double as a posing room.
Larger Bathtubs and Showers
Like many strength athletes, bodybuilders want larger bathtubs and showers that comfortably fit them. Fitzwater considered this necessary and sat in tubs to see how he fit if he did at all.
Fitzwater referred to soaking his legs in cold water, which might be similar to a cold tub. Cold water immersion has been shown to help reduce muscle soreness from intense resistance training and might have been top of mind while house hunting. (1)
Open Kitchen
Fitzwater prioritizes food to maintain his macronutrients and calorie needs for his gym time. As such, the room where he prepares his meals matters immensely. Fitzwater prefers an open kitchen that connects to the living room, as it would be a better fit for content creation.
A big stove, refrigerator, and many cupboards were also important. Fitzwater knows the appliance brands he prefers, which matter “a lot” with the volume of prepared meals he eats.
Garage with Room for a Treadmill
Many of the top bodybuilders have a treadmill at home, so they don’t have to spend extra time traveling to a gym for daily cardio. Fitzwater scoured every garage to see if there was enough room for a vehicle and a treadmill.
Nearest Gym Location
“The Martian” may plan on doing cardio at home, but he still needs a gym that suits his training needs. He went to a location in the Houston area and trained hamstrings and glutes. He may not have a residence yet but may have found his new training home.
Aside from his bodybuilding needs, Fitzwater and his wife wanted their future home to include a big backyard. The jury is still out on which home Fitzwater will buy into, but he is expected to share updates as these major life decisions unfold.
Regarding Fitzwater’s professional life, he is qualified for the 2025 Mr. Olympia contest thanks to his 2024 Prague Pro victory. He plans to compete in the 2025 Pittsburgh Pro as his debut in 2025. His 2025 Olympia qualification will remain secure regardless of his rank in Pittsburgh.
