Jay Cutler Compares His Workout Tempo to Dorian Yates’ Heavy Duty Training Intensity
Mr. Olympia winners like Jay Culter and Dorian Yates reached the top of the sport utilizing different training methods. In a recent JayCutlerTV appearance, Cutler examined Yates’ intense training style and revealed some of his goals for later this year.
Before Cutler’s rise in the IFBB Pro League, Dorian Yates dominated the 1990s with stunning muscle detail. His size and conditioning also helped him capture six Mr. Olympia titles (1992-1997). As long as Yates has been a member of the bodybuilding community, fans and athletes alike praise his unique training tactics. Instead of performing a fixed number of sets or reps, Yates routinely went to failure to stimulate muscle growth.
Yates retired on top in 1997, leading mass monsters like Ronnie Coleman and Cutler to reign over the Men’s Open. Cutler, who earned four Sandows, has since hung up his trunks but reflects on the practices that pushed him to become a star. En route to dethroning Coleman, Cutler shared that he adopted similar high-volume strategies utilized by ‘The King.’
At 49 years old, Cutler committed to a ‘Fit for 50′ challenge’ in hopes of transforming his body. He’s made it clear his plan is to use testosterone replacement therapy, quality training, and nutrition to bring about his best look in years.
Jay Cutler Talks Dorian Yates Heavy Duty Training: “It’s All-Out One Set”
Cutler says he’s a ‘volume trainer’ but would sometimes implement measures in the gym similar to Yates’ style.
“Heavy duty training though, like, I never really understood it because I don’t think I ever dug deep down inside, but I think some of it, I know I’m a volume trainer but I believe there’s been times where I’ve done kind of heavy duty training. It’s all-out one set.”
While Yates’ training sessions weren’t lengthy, he made the most of his time in the gym with intense warm-ups.
“But what’s funny is… and some people may correct me on this, I remember people would question how Dorian [Yates] would train. They would say he would only go to the gym and do one set but that’s not true, he’d build up to that one set, right? He would build up to that one set and do many sets right.”
Cutler Removes Cardio from Workout Schedule, Reveals 2023 Masters Olympia to Announce Names on April 25
With the intention of adding size, Cutler is taking a break from fasted cardio.
“So as you know, I don’t believe that your body is more – as reactive to the diet phase if you’re already beating it down so hard. If I’m doing fasted cardio every morning and I’m trying to put on size and I’m going to start going into a more strict program.”
“Ideally, I want to try to do as little as possible to get in the best shape as possible and I don’t know what this shape is going to be once I hit August, but I know one thing, I’m going to kind of make a switch right now and just let the training do its thing to my body and let the food.
Then, you know, when I get eight weeks down or whatever, 10 weeks down, then I’ll start really fine-tuning and if I feel like I need to add the cardio in I will, but as you know, I’ve done a million shows without cardio. So for me, the goal is to number one, do as little as possible and gather the best physique but I’m really looking forward to seeing what my body does week to week,” Cutler said.
Fans are unsure who will compete on the 2023 Masters Olympia stage, however, Cutler revealed the official competitors list will go public next week.
“I think Kamal is doing it [212 Masters] too. I think they choose by the 10th and then they’re going to announce it. I know they asked – I think they’re going to announce it around the 25th of April.”
“Phil Clahar, he’s doing it I think, he’s really good,” added Cutler. “They’re having every division, the women’s, I think even Men’s Physique right. So, I’ll be going over there to Romania, August 25.”
Ahead of the Masters Olympia, a few names have expressed interest. In addition to former 212 Olympia Kamal Elgargni, 2000s 212/Open standout Hidetada Yamagishi announced he will come out of retirement for one final contest, assuming the organizers give him the green light to compete.
